Redlands
Redlands, named for its red soil, is in San Bernardino County and is one of the oldest cities in California incorporated in 1888. It is 36 square miles at the base of the San Bernardino mountains, 63 miles east of Los Angeles, 45 miles west of Palm Springs and known as “A Big Town with a Small Town feel”. The city is rich in history and can be seen by the stunning Victorian homes throughout the city. Stroll down the tree lined State Street downtown for a look at some of the beautiful historic buildings that have unique boutique stores and eateries. A few of the well-known historic sites are the A.K. Smiley Public Library (a Moorish style library that was built in 1898) the Kimberly Crest Home and Gardens (a Victorian Chateau and Italian Renaissance style garden) and the Redlands Bowl, which is an amphitheater that was built in 1930 is the oldest continuously free outdoor venue in the United States for music and plays. The city is very walkable with parks along with walking and biking trails available for those outdoor adventures. The weekly Farmer’s Market is a great place to pick up local produce. Redlands is home to University of Redlands that was built in 1907 and to the pub that was inspiration for the hit TV show “Cheers”.
